A resource consent application is required to obtain permission from your local authority prior to carrying out projects. Projects may include subdivisions, moving boundaries, building apartments or building closer to a boundary than normally permitted, and carrying out earthworks and drainage.
What is involved?
The time it takes to gain a resource consent depends on what it is you want to do. The time can range from as little as a few weeks for simple matters, to several years for very complex projects. This timeline is not the same for all resource consents, but it is a good example of the types of things that need to occur in order to gain your resource consent.
The cost depends entirely on the scope of your project. Councils generally require a deposit when a resource consent application is made and will invoice you for any additional costs once their decision has been finalised. For complex applications, councils may invoice monthly. In granting your resource consent, most councils levy financial contributions for reserves, roading, stormwater, wastewater, and water supply as is appropriate to your area. These costs vary from council to council.
